What is a Hemoglobin A1c Test?

A Hemoglobin A1c test measures a person’s average blood glucose for the prior two to three months.
Hemoglobin is a protein that links with sugars such as glucose and is found in the red blood cells. When
and individual's diabetes is not under control this person has too much glucose in their blood stream, which
results in more hemoglobin becoming glycated. By measuring the percentage of A1c in the blood, an
individual can determine the average blood glucose over the past few months, and in turn better measure
how their diabetes treatment plan is working.

A Hemoglobin A1c test is not a way to diagnose diabetes. It also does not replace daily blood testing for
those who have diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends testing Hemoglobin A1c at least
twice per year and more if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
