Diabetes - Nearly one-third of those have it and don't know!
Diabetes, where the blood can not regulate sugars (glucose), is the most common disorder of the
endocrine (hormone) system, and affects more than 26 million people in the US.
There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1: inability to make insulin
Type 2: inability to respond to insulin
Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, skin infections, blindness, kidney
failure, high blood pressure, blood conditions and the need for lower extremity amputations.
Diagnosis of diabetes results mainly from the evaluation of a glucose test, but other considerations are
taken into account such as a physical exam, the presence or absence of symptoms, and medical history.
Best results from a glucose test come from those individuals who fast one night before testing.
What do the results mean?
Normal Glucose Levels: 70 - 100 mg/dL
Pre-Diabetes Levels: 100 - 125 mg/dL
Diabetes Levels: 126 mg/dL and higher on two testing occasions
Are there any symptoms of diabetes?
There are not always clear symptoms of diabetes, and diagnosis should be given from a physician with
the help of a glucose test results. However, there are some symptoms to be aware of:
. Excessive thirst and appetite
. Increased urination
. Unusual weight loss or gain
. Fatigue
. Nausea, and perhaps vomiting
. Blurred vision
. In women, frequent vaginal infections
. In men and women, yeast infections
. Dry mouth
. Slow-healing sores or cuts
. Itching skin
If you have one or several of the above symptoms, it is recommended that your glucose is tested after
a period of fasting.
