What is C-Reactive Protein and what does it indicate?

C-Reactive Protein is a form of protein found in the blood, and the level indicates whether there is an
infection in the body through the measurement of general inflammation present. High levels of
C-Reactive Protein are caused by major infections and many long-term diseases. However, a C-Reactive
Protein test will not tell you the location of an infection or its cause.

Why test for C-Reactive Protein?
•  To identify and track infection and diseases that cause inflammation, such as:
- Cancer of the lymph nodes
- Diseases of the immune system
- Painful swelling of the blood vessels in the head and neck
- Painful swelling of the tissues that line the joints
- Swelling and bleeding of the intestines
- Infection of a bone
•  To check for infection after a surgery. Levels of C-Reactive Protein rise during and directly after
surgery, but if the levels remain elevated after three days, infection could be present.
•  To see how well a treatment is working, such as a treatment for cancer or for an infection.
•  C-Reactive Protein is also found to be predictor of cardiovascular disease.
