New Influenza Vaccination Reduces Everyone’s Risk of Getting Sick
The majority of the population is aware that very young children and the elderly are at heightened risk of
contracting the flu each year, but what about the rest of us? Is it really that important to get vaccinated?
As we witnessed last flu season, the H1N1 virus threatened and even sadly took many lives around the
world, which increased all of our attention on the flu and its seriousness. It likely even touched one of us,
one of our family members or friends. The good news is that the 2010-2011 seasonal flu vaccine now has
the H1N1 virus covered within the same serum as the seasonal flu shot.
Additionally, as a result of this new vaccine covering the seasonal and H1N1 strains, the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention has now changed the recommendations for those who should receive an
annual vaccination. The new recommendation states that ALL people over the age of 6 months should
receive a vaccination each year, which now covers all age groups most likely to contract each type of
influenza strain.
And while summer may be the season for backyard barbecues and beach trips, it is also the time for
schools and businesses to identify experienced vaccination partners that can safeguard children, families
and workers against illness throughout the flu season, which runs September through March but continues
into spring months.

IN ADDITION TO GETTING A FLU SHOT:
Avoid close contact
Avoid bringing your child into close
contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick
Keep your child home when s/he has
the flu. Bed rest will aid in faster
recovery.
Cover your mouth and nose
Cover your mouth and nose with a
tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Clean your hands
Washing hands or using
alcohol-based sanitizers will help
protect your child from germs.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth
Germs are spread when a person
touches something that is
contaminated and then touches his
eyes, nose or mouth. Keep commonly
used surfaces and objects (door
knobs, telephones, toys) clean.
